PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

with "was/were + V1+ ing"


Açıklama:
  • Past Continuous Tense’i geçmişte yer almış bir olayı anlatmak için kullanırız.
  • Olay ya da durum geçmişte başlamıştır ve belirli bir süre devam etmiştir.
Mehmet : What were you doing at 8 o’clock last night? (Dün akşam saat 8’de ne yapıyordun?)

Zeki : I was playing the violin. (Keman çalıyordum.)





  • Past Continuous Tense ve Simple Past Tense cümleler "When" veya "While" (.......... iken) ile birleştirilebilirler.
Kate was watching TV when the phone rang. (Telefon çaldığında Kate TV izliyordu.)
Past continuous ......................................Simple past

Yukarıdaki örneğimizi şemamızda yerine yerleştirelim. Sizce hangi eylem diğerinden önce gerçekleşmiştir? Kate’in TV izleme eylemi mi yoksa zilin çalma eylemi mi?

Kate TV izlerken zil çaldığına göre, önce TV seyretme eylemi daha sonra zilin çalma eylemi gerçekleşmiştir. Ayrıca Kate’in TV izleme eylemi anlık bir eylem değil belirli bir süre devam eden bir eylem, yani Past Continuous bir eylemdir. Oysa zilin çalması anlık bir eylem olup tamamlanmıştır, yani Simple Past bir eylemdir.

Buna göre örneğimizi aşağıdaki şekliyle şemamıza yerleştiririz.

Aşağıdaki cümleleri incelerken hangi eylemin diğerinden daha önce gerçekleşmiş ve daha uzun süre devam etmiş olduğuna ve hangi eylemin tamamlanmış olduğuna dikkat ediniz.

☞ When Elif arrived, we were having dinner. ( Elif geldiğinde yemek yiyorduk.)

☞ Everybody was shouting when the teacher came.(Öğretmen geldiğinde herkes bağırıyordu.)

☞The car broke down while they were driving to Istanbul(İstanbul’a giderlerken araba bozuldu)

☞ While he was looking for the book, he found a million Turkish liras.

(Kitap ararken bir milyon lira buldu.)

☞ While the students were doing the examination, the lights went out.

(Öğrenciler sınavda iken ışıklar kesildi.)




  • Past Continuous Tense formunda iki ayrı cümle de While (........ iken) ile birleştirilebilir. Burada aynı zamanda devam eden iki ayrı eylem söz konusudur. Cümle yapıları Past Continuous Tense’dir.

☞ She was listening to the radio while she was washing the dishes.

(Bulaşıkları yıkarken radyo dinliyordu.)
☞ Mike was reading a newspaper while he was waiting at the bus-stop.

(Mike otobüs durağında beklerken gazete okuyordu.)
☞ Angelo was playing the guitar while Sam was playing the piano.

Fill in the blanks with Simple Past or Past Continuous forms of the verbs in brackets.
