SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE


Uses of the simple present tense

  • We use the simple present tense for statements that are always true.
    Summer
    follows spring. Gases expand when heated.
  • We use the simple present tense to refer to events, actions or situations which are true in the present period of time
    My mother works in a bank. Her brother wears glasses.
  • We use the simple present tense to describe habitual actions.
    I get up at 6:30. Ali visits her parents every day.

We add -s or -es to the base form of the verb in the third person singular.

  • Most verbs add " -s "
    • play / plays
    • work / works
    • drive / drives

  • Verbs add " -es "
    • when they end in -s kiss / kisses
    • when they end in -x mix / mixes
    • when they end in -o go / goes
    • when they end in -ch catch / catches
    • when they end in -sh push / pushes

  • There is a consonant before -y, change to -ies
    • try / tries
    • cry / cries

Frequency Adverbs:

They go before the verb
They go after "be", "don't" and "doesn't"

  • always % 100
  • usually
  • often
  • sometimes
  • never % 0

I always drink water.

I often play tennis at the weekends.


Time Expressions:

  • every day
  • every morning
  • every evening
  • every Monday, etc.
  • every night, etc.

I have breakfast every morning.

I sleep at 11:00 o’clock every night.

  • in the morning/afternoon/evening
  • in January
  • in Spring
  • in 1962
  • on Friday
  • at six o’clock

What time does the film start? It starts at 8:30.

He always watches TV in the evening.

I don’t work on Sundays.
