TAG QUESTIONS








  • A tag question is a short question ( am I? don't you?) that follows a statement

    • She knows English, doesn't she?
    • You can carry that box, can't you ?
    • I'm wrong, aren't I?

  • Auxiliaries ( am, is, are, was, were, have, has, etc. ) used in the statements are repeated at the end followed by the subject pronoun.

    • Ali saw you at the park yesterday, didn't he?
    • Angela stayed in your house last night, didn't she?

  • Tag questions are also possible with there:

    • There will be a basketball match tomorrow, won't there?
    • There aren't any students in the classroom, are there?

  • Tags can be used after indefinite pronouns:

    • Nobody is at home, are they? ( are they? because "Nobody is at home" is negative)
    • Everyone is ready, aren't they?

  • this and that are replaced by it
    • This/That car is expensive, isn't it?

Examples:
  • Istanbul is a very beautiful city, isn’t it?
  • Mehmet wasn’t in the class yesterday, was he?
  • You haven’t been to Italy yet, have you?
  • Zeki isn’t going to go to the cinema tomorrow, is he?
  • You can buy a lot of interesting things in the Bazaar, can’t you?
  • You need to have a lot of money, needn’t you?
  • Zehra will finish university next year, won’t she?
  • Your family went to France for their summer holiday, didn’t they?
  • You must be quite in the library, mustn’t you?

EXERCISE 1:

Add tag questions to the following sentences.

e.g That’s your book, isn’t it ?

Add auxiliary verbs to tag questions.
